The unit comes with options for RS-485 or RS-232 input, for easy installation. It was designed so that data coming from the input (RS-232 or RS-485) will transmit to all four loops of RS-485 networks. However, each loop of RS-485 devices will transmit data back to the input only, thus reducing any possible interference between each loop of the RS-485 devices. This rugged industrial-grade Serial-to-Fiber-Optic converter operates within a wide temperature range (-40ºF to 185ºF/-40ºC to 85ºC), and features 600W surge protection and 15kV static protection. It requires no software drivers or flow control, making the unit a rugged, highly reliable, and truly plug-and-play device.
Depending on the fiber cable and the type of converter used, a Single-Mode fiber optic converter can extend the RS232 / RS485 / RS422 distance to up to 24.8 miles (40 km), while a Multi-Mode fiber optic converter can extend the RS232 / RS485 / RS422 distance to up to 1.2 miles (2 km).
